All living beings have to go through stressful times in order to grow. My goal is to help you see that there is light at the end of the tunnel, no matter what the stressful situation you are currently encountering. Therapy is an opportunity to encounter yourself in a process of self-discovery with the guidance of a compassionate clinician who helps you make sense of your experiences and to choose coping skills that serve your well-being.

I am extensively trained in mindfulness as found within the original Buddhist Teachings, both in academic and monastic settings. This is what allows me to bring you a sense of tranquil safety within our therapy sessions. The tools you will learn allow you to stand strong, resilient and trusting in kyourself as you remove obstacles standing in your way to growth.

I work with individuals, couples and families dealing with:

  • depression
  • anxiety
  • relationship issues (break-ups, loneliness, conflict or wounds)
  • search for meaning/futility
  • issues of self-worth
  • past or current trauma

My name is Shaw Strannahan and I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Irvine, CA. I obtained my masters degree from a small Buddhist University in Los Angeles, where I am now an Associate Professor in the Counseling Master's Program. It is my belief that there is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach to therapy. As every one of us has a unique story, it’s important to tailor treatment to fit the individual! I do not view people as “broken”, I view them as “stuck”. My goal is to help you get unstuck and assist you in developing strategies to stay unstuck. also have knowledge of how diet and exercise can affect our mental health. I can incorporate this into our treatment plan if it’s of interest to you. My primary areas of focus are:

  • Couples
  • Teens
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Addiction
  • Stress Management
  • Pre-Marital Counseling
  • Healing from Affairs
  • Sexual Concerns

It's so easy to feel lost in the fast-paced world we live in today. Instead of embracing ourselves as a "perfectly imperfect" human being, we get stuck in the cycle of human "doing" while comparing our worth with the achievements of others. As an LGBTQ affirming and openly gay therapist, I understand the unique obstacles facing the LGBTQ community. In session, I approach every client with genuineness, curiosity and compassion. Often clients find that I work on a deeper level to help them heal their past wounds and to inspire noticeable change in the here and now. Some of my specialty areas are:

  • Couples/Relationship Issues
  • Anxiety/Depression/Self-Esteem
  • Trauma
  • Adults with ADHD
  • Gay Men/LGBTQ Issues
  • Codependency
  • Break-up Recovery
  • History of Toxic Relationships
  • Stress Management

I am very proud to introduce my associates here at Julie Wells Therapy. Thave received extensive training in Emotionally Focused Therapy for Couples and work directly with me as a team approach if necessary for individual or family counseling.

Julie WELLS Therapy

Family Counseling

My therapeutic philosophy can best be summed up in the famous quote by Anais Nin - "And the day came when the risk it took to remain tight in a bud was more painful than the risk it took to blossom."  My approach focuses on the whole person, encouraging the development of self-awareness, identity, personal growth, and authenticity to build emotionally fulfilling relationships with others and especially within oneself. As risky and uncomfortable as therapy can feel at times, it is in the collaborative work that we will do together where the freedom to blossom can be realized. Below are some of my specialty areas:
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Codependency
  • Identity Development
  • Life Transitions
  • Relationship Issues
  • Self-Esteem
  • Stress Management
  • Teen/Adolescents
  • Transgender/Gender Dysphoria/Coming Out
